Welcome to the Official Home
of the Rumford, Maine
Fire Department
We are located in the western foothills approximately one hour
from the New Hampshire border on U.S. Route 2.
The Town of Rumford was first settled in 1779 by Jonathan Keyes.
Rumford was the 123rd town in the District of Maine,
which at that time was still part of Massachusetts.
The original Charter was signed on February 21, 1800
making Rumford an official town.
Rumford currently has a population of approximately 6,500 and
borders one side of the Androscoggin River, while the town of
Mexico, Maine borders the other.
The Rumford Fire Department was formed in 1895.
Equipment was acquired through the Rumford Falls Village Corporation.
The first station housed a two wheel hand pulled hose cart with fifty feet
of hose and had twelve members.
It was located near the Park at the end of Congress St.
Today in its second century, the department is made up of a Chief,
three Deputy Chiefs, three Lieutenants and five privates and several
volunteer firemen.
The current station is located on the business island located
between River and Congress Street and adjacent to the Town Municipal building.
If any citizen has concerns about any matter please feel free
to contact the Town Manager or new Fire Chief Robert Chase.
Chase became Fire Chief on August 13th, 2009.
